1. An atom is defined as the smallest component of an element having chemical properties of an element.
2. Atoms consist of protons(positive charge), neutrons no charge), and electrons(negative charge. Protons atomic mass is 1, neutrons atomic mass is 1, and an electrons mas is 1/1840 of an proton.
3. An atom is tiny, the size of 10^-11 meter in diameter!
4. No atom as a particular shape but it does have to follow rules. For example when drawing out the atomic structure of an element you need to know the atomic number and atomic mass. The atomic mass is rounded (if it is not even) and that is the number of neutrons in the nucleus. The atomic number of the element is the number of protons inside the nucleus, and to figure out the electrons you subtract the atomic mass from the elements atomic number. The electrons are placed outside the nucleus.
5. The characteristics of electrons are that they have a negative charge and a mass of 1/1840 of a proton. Electrons like to be pared up in there atomic structure. Sometimes electrons have more than one ring on an element because electrons need to be spread out. They form bonds within the element that is why two electrons can be right next to each other.
