1. Explain what happened in that mountain village we described in class. You explanation will need to include detail that includes density and molecular weight of gases.
After researching the effects of Carbon Dioxide I stumbled upon some of the possible causes of death for the village people. Volcanos, deep lakes, and Humans on Wikipedia.
Volcanos: "Up to 40% of the gas emitted by some volcanoes during subaerial eruptions is carbon dioxide.[30] It is estimated that volcanoes release about 130-230 million tonnes (145-255 million tons) of CO2 into the atmosphere each year."
Which means that, because CO2 is an invisible gas the village people had no warning of the gasses harmful effects. Also, I found that CO2 can be caused by lakes.
"Locally high concentrations of CO2, produced by disturbance of deep lake water saturated."
Humans as well play apart in the making of deadly CO2.
"Emissions of CO2 by human activities are currently more than 130 times greater than the quantity emitted by volcanoes, amounting to about 27 billion tonnes per year.[33]"
CO2 has a density of "1.977 g/L (gas at 1 atm and 0 °C)"
CO2 has a molecular weight of 44.01. Retrieved from http://www.lenntech.com/carbon-dioxide.htm
Basically, with those facts stated I have came to the conclusion that the CO2 due to the atmosphere and density of the gas killed off the village people without any warning. The incident probably happened at night because I found out that
"bowl-shaped depression of about 100 m diameter, local concentrations of CO2 rise to above 75% overnight, sufficient to kill insects and small animals, but it warms rapidly when sunlit and the gas is dispersed by convection during the day"
This location was a poor choice to have a village due to the hazardous gases from the landscape.
